Examining Who Augustus was

Hello,

I have finished my product, turn it in, and I am reflecting on the entire process.

In general I say the process went well.  I learned a great deal about teaching.  I copied off much  of what I thought to do on what I have seen in recent pass, so college.  This proboble limited my presentation of the Higher grades of hight school, but the subject I used does somthing very similar.  My finale product seem effective to me and would allow a student who heard a lecture from it would be able to learn about Augustus.

Using the 8 W process was different.  I typically just do the work with limited amount of thinking about each part.  It was hard to think about what I was doing during every step of the process.  Most of the decisions I made were more random in nature.

My  largest strength during this porcess was being able to do solid research and have a good deal of basic infomation beforehand.  I know a good deal about Augustus and could easily make a product that discusses him.  It was also pretty easy for me to use the Web Mapping to work in the same way that I usually do pre-writing. Also, it seem like a good Power Point.  A strong product.

The weaknesses of the process would have to come from not being familar with Blogs and the technology involved.  I did not know how the technology worked.  Specifically, this morning I had great difficulty figuring out how to put the Product and the materials related to it on the Blog.  I did not know they way to put in the media.  I also had difficulty figuring out how the coment puttonworked  If I could do the whole process over again I think I could be more confident in what I was doing because I would know better.  I was also concern the entire time if I knew what I was doing.

In terms of how this was different from say teaching adults, it is  matter on how I desinged the assingment and lecture.  The Blue Book mentions how high school students should be able to evaluate infomation and see the usefulness of some literature.  Further, they should folow a solid methodology.  With students I had the lecture and had write a short paper on their views.  A college or adults class would have had the participants do research beforehand and have a discussion.  It would be more a debate among equals.  It could work in hight school as well, but with adults it would be more assumed.

In terms of what it is like in my own areas, I do not work in any but in my classes was all very similar.  I believe that this assingment both allowed be to do a good inquiry process and make a lesson that had others. I enjoyed this entire process in the end and will use this process to help me do the other projects.

I hope you enjoy the product.

Waving

Posted by Justin MacMillan in The product, Uncategorized

This is the Waving, examining the making of the product.

I communicated I think effectively in the Power Point and people reading will understand more about Augustus.  They should be able to make their own opinions.  It may repeat some points, but they are important ones.

I put the assingment on the forum and I feel fine about other classmates looking at the infomation.  I have no specific plans on having my family or friends look at the product.  This is not their area of interest.  Also, I am always nervous when hearing peoples opinions on my work.  Hate to watch a teacher grade my work.

Other that this I am excited to finish up my work.

The Product

I am trying to have the product be here.  It consist of the Power Point and Annotated Bibliography.  Also plan on having the copy I made of my expert response.  I think that I will need to put the Power Point on the Forum Page.  You will find all three on forums.  I should also mention that in the assingment I would give the students a copy of the Anntated Bibliography to use as possibe sources of infomation.

This has all three of them.  Has the Product, Annotated Bibliography, and a Expert opinion.

Wraping

Posted by Justin MacMillan in Uncategorized

Hello,

The process is going well, I should have done the wraping part earlier but here Im.

I have thought about how to use the infomation that I have gathered, and will be making a power point presentation.  This is somthing that I feel really comfertable with.  I have created several for classes and liked when teachers used them.  This will mean that the assingment will have to be for Seniors in High School.  This should work well becaus the presentation has the students “explore” the idea of who Augustus was “widely”(Calllison and Perry, The Blue Book, 44) and this will be exactly the kind of searching  and critical thinkin that the product will require.

Back to being specific on wrapping area.  This information is important to me because I have always found History, and Roman History specifically, interesting.  Augustus is perhaps the most important person in Roman History and knowing everything he did to change the world is important.  It is also important for students to understand these figures and see them as people.  The book says that history papers are supposed to be able to evaluate infomation and understand what it all means.  I enjoy it and hope the students would as well.

The infomation will be used to try and figure out who Augustus was.  Some of the infomation on him will be stated, but the end assingment will ask the students to make up their own mind.  The assingment will have the students “indentifying evidence,  reasoning, and implications”( Callison, “Critical Thinking,” 1).  The finale assingment will ask the students to make their own minds on Augustus, hopefully they will be creative and “make somthing new and original” (Callison, “Creative Thinking,” 1).

Anyone who is interested in History can benefits from examining who Augustus was.  He is a very important figure, and judging understanding him and what he did is important.

The Power Point Should be effective at showing all of this.  It will discuss all the differnt aspects of who Augustus was.  I plan on having my Bibliography as a handout in the final assesment.  I also plan on working on the Bibliography so that it is and Annotated Bibiography, still having the ten  websites.

My WebInsperation

Posted by Justin MacMillan in Uncategorized

I have thought about  the entire system of the Web Mapping.  Before this project I really had little idea what it was.  Once I got into the Web Mapping I saw that is was meant for thinking on idea.  This caused me to not do my idea of making the map to show Caesars and Anthony’s relationship, but use it to make out what I will be doing  in the Power Point product.  I have created the web and will be following it for my product.  http://www.mywebspiration.com/view/327573a2940a.

This has been interesting because I typically create bubble graphs whenever I write papers or do project.  The webs I created for this class was similar in design.  This might delay the completion of my product, but I now have a clearer idea of what I am creating.

Thoughts at this point

Posted by Justin MacMillan in Uncategorized

Hello,

I am at the Weaving phase of the process and am a little nervouse.  I mentioned before my general uncertainty.  I have had no real comments on my Blog, but I have kept up with several others and in comparing them I have found some good ideas.  Also, I seem to be doing okay.  For example, I saw on person put their response from their expert on the Blog itself.  This seems like a good idea.

In terms of making my project I am well on my way.  I have completed the Bibliography of websites that I used and will be adding that to the end of my Power Point presentation that will be my product.  I have also figured out how concept map will work.  What I was thinking was creating somthing to help show the compicated nature of Augustus relationships with the differenent groups during the civil wars.  Show how he was an enemy of Anothony at first, became an alley against the other killers of Julius Caesar, then unstable partners, somwhat allies, and finnaly enemies again.  This is a complex relationship that can be shown in a concept map. The Callison readings the importance of visual learnin.  It can help to show these complex ideas in a easier to understand format.

Also, when I am doing the work tomorrow I will be trying to make a project that will have the students use Critial Thinking.  Evidence of who Augustus was as a person, a ruler, and a politician.  The product will be made to see the evidence, reason their way through it, and see the implications (Callison, “Critial Thinking,” 1).   I hope to work through these issues tomorrow and have a mostly finished product by then.  Think begins reflecting.

So, things seem to be goinw well.

Wiggling

Posted by Justin MacMillan in Uncategorized

Hello

This is the Wigglling portion of the Assingment.  As an asside isn’t that kind of a weird name.  Anyway, I will be working on the issues for this as the are mentioned in the main assingment page.

It first asked what was done with the infomation found. I have been through the websites and papers I mentioned earlier in the Blog.  They have given me a great deal of infomation. I have collected this information and have examined it.  Begining Friday I will start making my product and working in all that need to be done in the process.

In general I enjoyed reading the material on the different views of Augustus.  I did find that most of them were positive and made great mention of all he did.  Some were of course biased, the ones writting by Augustus being the most so, but gave infomation that can show not only his significance, but what kind of ruler he was.  It took some time to read the infomation from all of them, but not that hard.  I already knew some of the infomation, but some of the infomation was new.  Finding and using the infomation was not that difficult.  Was really just a process of reading throught everything.  The only real difficulty has been thinking what to do at each step.

The reading does make a clear statment abouthow I need to “evaluate the results.”  The best way to do this is to look at the question I had about the assingment.  The first was did it mater won the war, specifically in terms of good or bad.  This is something that they papers and websites answer.  I also asked if the peace he gave justify the wars and if he was a good ruler.  These were all tied together, most saying that he did do good.   This consince on his contribution is helpful in knowing about him, but I was concenred that there would be no negative views.  I did find two sources that show some of his more negtive aspectics.  What was very useful was His speech before Actium and the article called “Augustus.”  The first speech is one by Augustus which I thought help to so how he used negative propoganda all the time.  The other paper actually tried to examine who Augustus was on a moral level like  I plan to do.   Even the other websites and articles mention how he had people killed who were threats.  They answered the question, so the sources are good.

Not everything I saw match up perfecly with what I already know.  For example, the source that had a lot of infomation on his life, http://www.roman-emperors.org/auggie.htm#53, mentioned Augustus, Octavian at the time, use of Anthony’s will against him.  But in the class I took the teacher said these were fake.  It is interesting, shows that these websites and articles have infomation on Augustus but not an anaylsis of him.  This will be somthing that  will encouraging when I make the lesso and power point.

This is what I have done.  The only real tension that I have had is trying to mak sure everything is done for the assingment.  It all seems to be going well, but  I have not taken a teaching class before and I am nervous.  Further, I seem to be working on the paper in all of my free time.  I am a little concerned about having enough websites for the bibliography I need for the assingment, but I should okay.   I have mentioned the reading when it is useful and I think everything is fine.

Found materials, will Start to look at them

Posted by Justin MacMillan in Uncategorized

Hello,

I have been making good progress and am currently at the point where I look at the research and decide what to use.  This would be a mixter of Wiggling and Weavng.  Within the next two or three days I plan to read all of my sources, including a response from an expert on the Ask an Expert suggested in the assingment.

This is the part of the process that where most of the work will be done.  I will use my sources to create a bibliography.  I have found in quick checking that the bibliography is supposed to have ten websites.  I still have this, use JSTOR and Ask and Expert as examples.  I will work on this and have a larger bibliography at a latter date, probable just before I submit my product.

Still at the moment I am looking at my sources and formulating what I will be using.  Also, I mentioned looking for a history citation manual to be found on Friday.  I was unable to find what I was looking for, several differnt kinds but not what I was looking.  I have saved a number of papers that I have written for differnt classes.  These will work for the product I am using.  I will look at the citation from these papers and know what to do.  I remember most of the steps.  I enjoy using Footnotes and Endnotes a great deal and will follow this porcess.

My biggest concern going forward to make the product is making it appropriate for a specific leanring level.  I have no real experiance in teaching and will have to rely on the book for how to make the products.  I generally plan to have this lesson be somthing for high school students to look at.  The Blue Book  says specifically that such students need to be able to “draw conclusions about roles in life from data”(Collison and Preddy, The Blue Book, 91).   This is what I want them to be able to do.

I do not know exactly where I am in answering the quesions I mentioned at the begining, but I should be able to.  I am not sure what model of learning I will use in showing off my lesson.  It will end with an assingment, but all I am sure about that is that it would be more free the a Controled assingment.

That is where I am now.  Hope to answer do the next tow W’s by Tuesday.  After that I an begin to actually make the product.

Webbing

Posted by Justin MacMillan in Uncategorized

Hello

I mentioned in the last post the sources that I have found.  I will now talk about how I came to find all these sources and why I used those strategies.  I did not put a lot of thinkinginto what Iwas looking for before I started Looking.  A large amount of infomation on who Augustus was would really be all I neede and I felt confident I could find it.  I plan on making the bibliography mentioned in class.  I figures just typed in Augustus AND the Roman Republic and found a large number of resoures.

On Monday I started looking for websites.  For the bibliography mentioned ten sources needed and having some from different kind of sources.  That is where I stated finding sources online.   On this first night I found 6 sources on the first night. I used a basic Google search.  With this I found the websites.  Several of them are connected with Universities.  My first 4 fources were pretty basic from wesites.  They they bibliographic infomation on them.  One of the websites was most imporessive.  It is called De Imperaroibus  Romanis, and has a lot of information on Augustus with many articles.  The fith website has a listings of Augustus Dynasty, starting with him.  This would be a very useful visual device for the power point and as the online reading said, “Visual Literacy is a critial life skill.”(Calllison, ”Visual Literacy,” 1).  The final source I found for that day was a translation of the speech Augustus gave before the battle of Actium, where he defeated Mark Anthony. Will give important insights into who he was.  That wha I did that night.

The Next day, Tuesday I looked for the rest of my sources.  I wanted different kinds, so I went to JTOR for information on Augustus.  I picked JSTOR because I have used it in the past to great sucess.  I had some difficulty, there are apparenly some authors and other figures named Augutus.  I had to put in the term “Fall of the Roman Republic” into one of the fields.  I found three real useful articles that look at how effective a ruler Augustus was.  The finale source that I found that night an ancient translation of Augustus’s own work on his rules.  If I remebe correctly it was meant for the grandchildren that he expected to suceed him.  This seems like a nice mix of different sources.

I think that this has been a good process.  I still plan on contacting an expert, but this is somthing that I will do tomorrow.  With the expert opinion and start making the the project.  I will be starting the Wiggling phase of the project tomorrow.
